Kelly Clarkson carried her mum up the Great Wall

Kelly Clarkson carried her mum up the Great Wall

Kelly Clarkson has shared the story of how she got her mother, Jeanne Taylor, to the top of the Great Wall of China – by carrying her on her shoulders.

Speaking on the Las Culturistas podcast with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, the singer talked about a family trip to Beijing. Her mum was still recovering from knee surgery and was using a cane, while the steps up to the UNESCO World Heritage Site were, in Clarkson's words, crazy tall.

Clarkson remembered telling her mother they hadn't travelled all the way to Beijing just to look at the stairs. She was set on getting everyone up there, and with a crowd watching, she put her mum on her shoulders and pushed her up the steps from underneath. They made it, though she suspects the locals were quietly thinking: crazy Americans. She found the whole thing hilarious.

The trip meant a lot to her, and she was struck by how many strangers offered to help. She said people are so polite and helpful towards mothers and grandmothers, and she loved the deep respect shown to elders.

The conversation also turned to rollercoasters, which Clarkson said she loves – with one exception. She isn't a fan of Thunderhead, the wooden coaster at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. She rode it with her sister and joked that at least she would die alongside her.
