Miley Cyrus on Her Last Talk With Dolly Parton

Miley Cyrus has opened up about the last time she spoke with her godmother, Dolly Parton.

In an interview with Apple Music published on 17 September, the Flowers singer talked about how Parton shaped her approach to performing. She said her godmother showed her that it is possible to have a stage persona while staying true to yourself.

Cyrus, 33, recalled a period when persona played a huge part in her life. Looking at it now, she said, she can see that having a persona and still being yourself is something she learned from Parton.

At times, she added, the gap between her public and private selves felt so large that she thought of her performance identity as a kind of drag. She joked that the way she presents herself on stage is nothing like the person who feeds her pet tortoise each morning, though that person is still part of her – she simply keeps her switched off.

The singer also said she has always sent Parton an early vinyl copy of every new album she makes. Parton, who died on 25 August at 80, was the first person to receive each record, and Cyrus said she will send her this one too, as she always does.

Their final conversation, Cyrus revealed, was about her forthcoming album, Bass Persuades. She told Parton about the record, noting how different the two of them are – and how that difference is exactly what made them such a good match. Parton, she said, is known for the wigs, the makeup and the spectacle, but people are drawn to how real and authentic she is underneath.
